Married Drivers vs. Single Drivers and The Cost of Car Insurance

We know things like your commute, your driving record, your vehicle, where you live, and your age can play a role in your car insurance premiums. But can your marital status have an effect on how much you pay for insurance?

The answer is yes!

Married drivers might pay less for car insurance

As it turns out, marriage can play a part in how much you pay to insure your vehicle.

A 2015 study found that in most states, married drivers paid less for the same car insurance than single, divorced, or widowed drivers. In fact, many companies charge the same premium for single, divorced, or widowed drivers.

Why do married people pay less for car insurance?

One reason car insurance premiums could be lower for married people than single, divorced, or widowed driver comes down to the findings of a 2004 study by the National Institutes of Health. It found married drivers had statistically lower rates of driving injuries than single drivers. Often, with this perceived lower risk comes lower insurance rates.

Experts also suggest that married drivers are more careful and focused on their health which is interpreted by risk assessment experts as being less likely to take risks on the road.

What else should I know?

The difference in rates between married and single drivers tends to decrease as drivers get older. For example, a 20-year old unmarried man might pay significantly more than a 35-year old unmarried man with the same driving record.

Car insurance rates tend to go down as drivers age because they become statistically less likely to be involved in an accident. Drivers who are 16-20 have a much higher statistical likelihood of being involved in a collision which is why rates tend to go down as they age.

The difference in premiums for married and single drivers is studied in relation to the legally required liability insurance. When a driver chooses to add comprehensive or collision insurance to their policy, they may have more price flexibility, but this largely depends on selecting the right insurance agency to work with.
