Home Safety Tips During the Holiday Season

At Rueter Insurance, we love helping our clients address and minimize any potential risks in their home or business to help protect their assets and keep their insurance costs down.

During the holiday season, there are certain risks you face at home and in today’s post, we want to help you make sure your home is as safe as it is festive this year!

Clear snow as soon as possible

If you’re able to clear snow from your driveway and walkway as soon as possible, this can help prevent ice from forming. It makes it a safer place not only for you and your family, but postal workers and other visitors to your home.

Keeping your roof clear of heavy snow piles is also smart because it can help prevent a leaky or sunken roof. This can be a dangerous task, however, so hiring an expert is usually the best route.

Keep pets and children away from holiday plants

Holiday plants like holly and mistletoe can be a beautiful addition to your home, but be sure to exercise caution with your pets and kids around plants. Keep them away from where they can reach your plants to ensure they don’t ingest anything toxic.

Use caution during decorating

Hanging up Christmas lights on your home is a great way to mark the season, but it’s also something that needs to be done very safely! To start, make sure you’re buying good quality lights with a good safety rating. Never hang lights by yourself, and make sure someone is spotting you and securing the ladder when you’re up high.

Be diligent with security

There tends to be an increase in break-ins during this time of year: Whether you have a DIY home security system or a professionally installed version, it’s important to be extra vigilant during the holiday season. We talk more about how to choose the right home security system here.

No matter what time of year it is, we can help you with risk assessment and management as well as making sure you have the right coverage in place. Give us a call today so we can get started!
